What do you mean S197 Mustang?

When the 2005 Mustang was being developed, Ford used the designation S197 to represent this all new generation of Mustang. The previous generation was considered a derivative of the old Fox-body platform that has it's origins in the 1979 Ford Fairmont (anyone remember that car?). New Edge refers to the 2000-2004 generation of Mustangs, SN-95 represents the 1995-1999 Mustangs. Both the New Edge Mustangs and the SN-95 Mustangs are considered Fox-body derivatives.

So the 2005-2009 is the S197, not sure if the newly redesigned 2010 Mustang, which has already been unveiled will be part of the S197 family or not. From what I can find out, the 2010 Mustang is very similar in many mechanical respects to the S197. While the exterior sheetmetal is all new, early indications are that the platform is very similar to it's predecessor. Hopefully, many of the existing aftermarket performance parts developed for the S197 Mustang will work...only time will tell.

Using a model designation to refer to a generation of Mustangs makes it easier than saying "it's the same as the 2005-2009 Mustangs". So look for more parts dealers and manufacturers and enthusiasts to adopt this S197 handle for the 2005-2009 Mustang.

Welcome to the Pony Car Blog

Ever since the introduction of the 2005 Ford Mustang, also known as the S197 Mustang, I have been smitten with it. To many, the Mustang represents more than just a good looking car to drive around in. It is an expression of one's personality, it is a gateway to many high performance and racing arenas. There is a large contingent of enthusiasts that think the Mustang is a perfect weapon for Drag Racing, others like to go and participate in track days, time attacks, road racing, and autocross events. And then there is the whole spectrum of car shows and customizing!

The automotive performance aftermarket has responded with so many parts to modify the S197 Mustang platform for just about any automotive endeavor you could imagine. 1000's of parts are available, to accomplish your automotive Mustang dreams. While the Mustang specific aftermarket was healthy before the S197 platform was introduced, it has simply exploded to offer a mind-blowing amount of goodies.
